As a mobile communications device, the TAG Heuer Meridiist Infinite may look antiquated. It has a small, 2.4-inch TFT LCD display and tactile keys. Compare that with smartphones of today which are dominated by a large touchscreen displays and virtually no external keys. But hiding in plain sight on the Meridiist Infinite might be the future of civilization itself. That’s because this phone is charged by nothing but light. A thin layer of transparent photovoltaic cell tops up the phone’s batteries through natural or artificial light. You read that right, this phone is solar-powered (or charged at least). Using the Wysips Crystal Technology, the phone is the world’s first communication instrument with Perpetual Power Reserve. It may not be as big as smartphones but the Meridiist Infinite will go on operating happily long after its smartphone counterparts have died. Made from grade 5 Titanium, carbon and rubber, the phone will have dual SIM slots and will feature the first dashboard chronograph ‘Time of Trip’. Solar power is the way of the future, because conventional power technology has its limitations. This means that this phone may look old but it’s actually a step forward in the right direction. Only 1,911 samples will be made. $TBD.
