You’ve probably heard of the fact that there have been more footprints on the moon than on the deepest parts of the world’s oceans. That’s because the abyss has some pretty tough challenges that humans should conquer first. The greatest of those challenges is the immense pressure. Divers know these all too well, and do their equipment. Apart from physical exertion, they are under time pressure as well. Get the timing wrong and it’s lights out, literally. Because of that, they need a watch that can withstand the rigors of the deep. Rolex has been in the diving game for a while now and they’ve perfected the Oyster Perpetual to handle such challenges. The 2014 Sea-Dweller 4000 is the epitome of Rolex’s diving knowhow. Capable of bringing divers down to 4,000 feet or 1,220 meters, the watch features the unique helium escape valve. This allows the watch to safely expel the build-up of helium within the watch’s 40mm case. Helium molecules are so small that it creeps into the watch on normal atmospheric pressure. But during a dive, they expand and tend to wreak havoc on a watch’s mechanisms. Without a helium escape valve, the watch can just pop its crystal and ruin its movement. The Sea-Dweller 4000 has no such problems though. So good is the watch’s patented helium valve that diving record holders have relied on their Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller for accurate timekeeping. Powered by a COSC-Certified Rolex caliber 3135 mechanical movement with Perpetual rotor, the watch is simple as it is elegant. It comes with a stainless bracelet that can be fitted with an extension, allowing divers to wear the Sea-Dweller 4000 over a diving suit. $10,400.
