Very few guitars get the honor of having a name for itself. Sure, there are plenty of axes with quirky names but mostly, they’re the model names that the manufacturer have christened it with. None will probably have the interesting backstory as the “Lucille”. One might think that this is the name of legendary blues guitarist B.B. King’s wife or lady love. But no, the guitar was so named after a crazier story. It involves a bar fight, a flaming bar, and a woman named Lucille, who was the origin of said bar fight. This year marks the 65th anniversary of Lucille, the guitar, and Gibson is honoring her and her handler with this special edition. It starts with the semi-acoustic ES-355 model, without the f-holes as the King of Blues preferred it. The ebony finish is nicely contrasted by the gold hardware like the Grover tulip tuners, humbucker pickup covers and the TP6 fine tune stop bar tailpiece. The name ‘Lucille’ is carved on the headstock and decorated with fine mother-of-pearl and the phrase ’65 Years’ is engraved on the gold truss rod covering. After all these years, we are sure that the thrill is never gone for B.B. King – not while the Lucille is still happily singing along with him. $3,800.
